Samsung Notebook Series 9
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has launched the second generation of Samsung Notebook Series 9, which it claims to be the world's thinnest and most compact premium notebook. Targeted at premium notebook users, who are willing pay a bit extra for high quality and great design, the super-slim notebook will be priced at Rs 1,02,990. "The new Samsung Notebook Series 9 represents the ultimate in Samsung craftsmanship towards precision engineering and premium design. The new Series 9 embodies the originality and heritage of its predecessor while eliminating unnecessary factors. The refined aerodynamic design of the new Series 9 represents the best of Samsung's design with top performance and functionality," states Ranjit Yadav, Country Head, Samsung Mobile and IT.

Samsung claims the Series 9 required 9,000 hours of design work and 24,000 hours of R&D. Components such as the LCD panel, keyboard, motherboard, cables, fan and battery have been precision-engineered to fit precisely in single-shell ultra-slim chassis. The 13-inch version measures only 12.9mm (0.5") and weighs just 1.16kg (2.5 lbs) - 28 per cent smaller than its predecessor. The Toshiba Protege Z830 used to claim the thinnest/lightest Ultrabook slot with a 15.9mm thickness and 1.12kg weight.

The Samsung Series 9 features Samsung's MaxScreen technology, which minimizes the bezel size while maximizing the screen size by an extra inch. It will also feature the latest Intel Core i7 Processor and will have Turbo Boost Technology to intuitively allocate CPU resources as needed. A 256GB solid state drive (SSD) provides plenty of storage, lower power consumption and improved performance with less noise and heat output. It will also have a quick start-up, thus reducing power usage, allowing faster data access and higher reliability. Samsung also promises nine hours on battery life thanks to its advanced Lithium-Polymer battery and Samsung's innovation PowerPlus charging technology.

Samsung has also launched its Notebook Series 5 550P with Intel's latest 3rd generation Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 2GB graphics, full HD display, JBL optimised speakers with subwoofer as well as a Blu-ray drive and up to 2TB HDD storage. Mars Curiosity sends new photo..

This image was taken by Curiosity's 100-millimeter Mast Camera on August 23. According to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is in charge of Curiosity, the pointy mound in the center of the image is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) across and 300 feet (100 meters) high.

Curiosity landed on Mars early on August 6, after the much publicized "seven minutes of terror," in which the SUV-size vehicle was gently lowered to the surface of the red planet by an innovative "sky crane." The rover is loaded with sophisticated equipment to measure conditions on Mars and look for the elemental building blocks of life.

Samsung unveils Windows 8-powered smartphone ATIV S..

BERLIN/SEOUL: Samsung became the first handset maker to announce a smartphone using Microsoft's latest mobile software, making its surprise, hurried announcement just days before the highly anticipated launch of Nokia's version.

The brief announcement on Wednesday at aBerlin electronics show comes amid expectations that smartphone makers may turn increasingly to Windows devices after a US jury decided many of Samsung's Google Android-based phones infringed Apple Inc patents.

"It looks like a good phone, and seems like a pre-emptive announcement ahead of Nokia," said Sid Parakh, an analyst at investment firm McAdams Wright Ragen, of the Samsung phone.

"Microsoft or Windows never got their best teams, never got their best designs, just becauseAndroid was doing so well. With the change in the legal environment, there's a case to be made that Samsung will likely shift some of those resources to broaden out or diversify their own exposure."

Nokia, the ailing Finnish mobile firm, once the world's leading producer of phones but now struggling to reverse losses, is due to unveil its new Lumia line of smartphones using Windows Phone 8 in New York on September 5.

Samsung's new phone called ATIV S -- tacked onto the end of a long news conference in Berlin that focused on other products -- may elevate expectations for the Lumia. Samsung's ATIV S Windows phone sports a high-end 4.8-inch display, Corning "Gorilla" glass, and an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, Microsoft posted on its official blog on Wednesday.

"Expectations for a 40 megapixel or possibly 20 megapixel camera model are running high. IfNokia does not unveil a monster camera handset next week, many will be disappointed," said Tero Kuittinen, analyst at mobile analytics firm Alekstra.

But "this leaves Nokia plenty of room to draw a clear contrast with its upcoming announcement."

Samsung's Windows-based smartphone, introduced on Wednesday, marks the first in a "big lineup of new hardware" from the South Korean company based on Microsoft's software, Microsoft executive Ben Rudolph said in a blog posting.

Analysts say the introduction of Samsung's Windows phone may be designed to assuage concerns that Microsoft will favor Nokia, whose Chief Executive Stephen Elop -- himself a former senior Microsoft executive -- has staked its future on the Windows platform.

"The fact Samsung was allowed to be the first to announce is Microsoft's backhanded way of letting other vendors know that Nokia is not getting special treatment," Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart said.

But Jack Gold, an independent mobile consultant who runs J. Gold Associates, argued Samsung had signalled its commitment to Windows for a while, but Nokia will remain the primary driver of the new breed of Microsoft-powered devices.
"Samsung has crossed the start line first and set the bar for Nokia's launch," said Geoff Blaber,                  analyst at CCS Insight.

Stealing a march
Microsoft gave a preview of its Windows Phone 8 software in June, and promised the first phones would be on the market by the autumn.

Windows Phone 8 looks similar to, and is built on the same core code as Microsoft's upcomingWindows 8 operating system, but is not the same product. Windows 8, which will run on tablets and PCs, is scheduled to launch on October 26.

Samsung said the ATIV phone would hit stores in the October-November period but did not give an exact start date.

On Wednesday, the Korean corporation also showed off a slew of tablets using Windows 8 software and the second generation of its popular Google Android-based Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet "phablet" in downtown Berlin.

Samsung has sold some 10 million of its original Galaxy Note devices, creating a new product category which has smaller screen than tablets, but bigger than smartphones.

"I am pretty confident it will even outsell its predecessor," said JK Shin, Samsung's chief of mobile business.

Samsung hopes the new device will take the focus away from its loss of the court case. Apple is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to turn legal victory into tangible business gain.

Samsung hopes the phablet upgrade will lift any post-Apple gloom. The new version of the Note features a thinner and slightly bigger 5.5-inch screen, quad-core processor, the latest version of the Android operating system called Jellybean, and improved stylus function.

"There won't be huge innovative changes in design, but the Note 2 will feature quite a few improvements and enable Samsung to carry on its strong sales momentum in the category," said Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities. "With the launch, Samsung will also be trying to turn around downbeat sentiment after the US legal defeat."

Apple did not include the Note and other newly unveiled Samsung products in its original lawsuit. But the company and its lawyers are expected by many legal experts to try and use last week's legal victory to go after future gadgets, especially because the jury found infringing features in Samsung phones such as pinch-and-zoom and bounce-back -- common in Android.

Shares of Microsoft finished up 2 cents at $30.65 on Wednesday.

Samsung Galaxy Note II's new version unveiled; company may bounce back with new 'Phablet'

SEOUL: Samsung Electronics unveiled the second generation of its popular Galaxy Note phone-cum-tablet at Europe's biggest electronics show in Berlin later on Wednesday, as the South Korean firm comes under pressure to innovate after losing a US patent battle with Apple.

A US federal jury last week found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages. Apple is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to turn legal victory into tangible business gain.

The Galaxy Note phablet, Samsung's second-most popular smartphone after its flagship Galaxy S, is not included in the list of the potential US sales ban, and Samsung hopes the phablet upgrade will lift any post-Apple gloom at the South Korean group.

The new version of the Note is expected to feature a thinner and slightly bigger 5.5-inch screen, powerful quad-core processor, the latest version of Google's Android operating system called Jellybean, and improved stylus function.

It's the latest product to illustrate Samsung's attempts to make bold design changes as it comes increasingly under pressure to differentiate its line-up from the iPhone, whose simple and large touchscreen-based design revolutionised the mobile industry and is still considered the gold standard of design.

Govt approves Rs. 14,000 crore to promote hybrid, electric vehicles.

New Delhi: To reduce dependence on fossil fuels, India will spend at least Rs. 22,500 crore in the next eight years to promote electric and hybrid vehicles, of which the government will provide some Rs. 13,000-14,000 crore.
Auto makers and the government plan to put six million electric vehicles on road by 2020, according to a new policy approved on Wednesday.
The government will fund research and development, infrastructure and subsidies, S. Sundareshan, secretary, department of heavy industries, said after a meeting of ministers, officials and experts.
“What has been approved today is a policy document and more details will come at a later stage,” Sundareshan said. “This investment will save Rs. 30,000 crore in the next eight years on fuel.”
That the government was planning such a move was reported in Mint on 6 December.
Last year’s national budget had proposed a plan to develop electric and hybrid vehicles. Later, the government established a National Council for Electric Mobility led by heavy industries minister Praful Patel, and a National Board for Electric Mobility to ensure uniform rules in all the states.
The policy will benefit the makers of electric scooters such as Electrotherm (India) Ltd that makes YO bykes, the Munjal family-owned Hero Electric, and the country’s only manufacturer of electric cars, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd.
Some 130,000 electric vehicles were sold in India in 2011-12, according to lobby group Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles. Electric scooters cost between Rs. 26,000 and Rs. 43,000, while Reva cars start at Rs. 3.5 lakh. Japan-based Nissan Motor Co. Ltd’s electric car, Leaf, is the largest-selling car in the world that runs on battery. It costs $33,000 (around Rs. 18 lakh) in the US and its battery cost is at least half the car’s price.
The policy should provide a good direction to the development of electric and hybrid vehicles in the country although India is a late entrant, said Rakesh Batra, partner and national leader of automotive sector at Ernst and Young, a consulting firm.
“The question is the viability gap,” said Pawan Goenka, president, automotive, at Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. “There is no doubt that the customers will have to pay certain premium upfront but we will encourage them with subsidy.”
“There will be incentives and subsidies for all the stakeholders,” an official said, requesting anonymity. “While the customer may get some tax incentive, the manufacturers may also get some subsidies. The idea is to offer direct subsidies on EVs (electric vehicles) to make them attractive to customers.”
The department of heavy industries proposed income tax incentives for buyers of electric vehicles in its budget recommendations, Mint reported on 29 February.

Upcoming HTC tablet leaked, sports unusual design

We have heard quite a few rumours of an upcoming HTC tablet in the last few months, but nothing was concrete so far, but that has changed now. As, images of what seems like a 10-inch tablet have hit the micro-blogging website Twitter.
Posted by Twitter user @evleaks, these pictures show an unusually designed tablet, which has very less bezel on three sides, while one side has huge bezel, which also houses the front camera. Also, if we take the positioning of logo on the back in consideration, the rear camera is actually present on the bottom of the tablet instead of the usual top spot.

Other details that we can take from these images - the HTC tablet seems incredibly thin, the thinnest we have seen so far.
While, there is no way to test the authenticity of these images, take these with a pinch of salt. If the tablet is indeed real, we will find out in the next few days at IFA trade fair, where we are expecting the launch of Desire X and HTC One X successor.
HTC has launched two Android tablets till now, Gingerbread powered Flyer and Honeycomb sporting Jetstream.

Samsung working on Android-based Galaxy S camera....

Samsung already has a good interface for its point-and-shoot compact cameras. However, it appears that the brand is seeking to enhance it to a large extent. If a report by GSMArena is anything to go by, Samsung may be making an Android-based point-and-shoot digital camera expected to feature in the brand’s Galaxy S line-up of devices.

Samsung have recently unveiled its Galaxy Player 5.8 that runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS. If the report by GSMArena holds true, then it will be another device that is not a smartphone or a tablet launched by the brand to run on the Android OS.

Will.i.am song broadcast by Nasa's Curiosity from Mars....

A song by the US musician Will.i.am has become the first piece of music broadcast back to Earth from Mars.
Reach For the Stars was played back by Nasa's Curiosity rover as part of
an educational event, a collaboration between Nasa and the Black Eyed Peas rapper's i.am.angel Foundation.
But with no speakers on the rover, the track was not played on the red planet itself.
